Once Upon A Wedding - 1940's & 1950's Style

Michelle and Daren were joined in marriage on March 19, 2005 in a ceremony with a 40s/50s “Sinatra” theme that filled their guests with happiness and surprise.

THE PLACE

At Falkner Winery in the Temecula Wine Country you will enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains, vineyards and valleys. It is a unique and romantic location for weddings. Its expansive arched open patios and tree-lined yards provide a perfect setting for the ceremony and reception. The beautiful wedding arch and waterfall backdrop makes every bride and groom live in the moment.
And after the ceremony, as the reception begins, fairy tale white lights glimmer on all the trees, arched patios and around the dance floor. The property is large enough to accommodate “alternative” plans, which brings us to …

THE BIG DAY - MINUS ONE

The day before the wedding was wet and windy; it could have presented a “nightmare” for the bride and her family who had planned for a beautiful outdoor ceremony. A flurry of activity took over the quiet setting making it apparent that contingency plans were already in place for this rainy possibility. Indeed, three tents were quickly erected; one for the ceremony; one for the appetizers and drinks and an enormous one, complete with stage, for the reception.
THE CEREMONY

As the guests were ushered into the area the first impression might have been WOW! The ushers were very stylish in their “Sinatra Style” Fedoras and matching suits. They were wowed again by the beautiful floral arrangements atop tall pedestals that lined the aisle. Each arrangement was glorious with two-dozen long stemmed red roses and white orchids. As the soft music began, the procession of five bridesmaids, one junior bridesmaid, flower girl and ring bearer heightened the drama of the “Sinatra” theme. The bridesmaids 40’s style dresses were black - Hair Stylist Shanda Sohner created hairdos swept off their faces reminiscent of “The Andrew Sisters”. It was obvious that coordinator, Diana Ross had lots of details to attend to! Michelle was radiant in a strapless white gown and completed the wedding theme with hairdo and style.
WONDERFUL APPETIZERS

After the ceremony the wedding party was spirited away by photographers Randy and Lisa Green who had already taken many beautiful shots. The guests entered tent number two to partake of an amazing spread of appetizers presented by “Once Upon A Wedding -Caterers of Fine Foods” to tempt one and all. The guests enjoyed Falkner Winery’s own labels including Sweet Loretta wine - a semi sweet white wine created by her husband to honor Loretta Falkner - as well as their choice of other drinks served at the bar.

TENT NUMBER THREE - AMAZING

This gigantic area was beautifully decorated and tables were set out to seat almost 240 guests. The THEME was continued with table names such as Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, Ronald Reagan, Al Capone, Frank Sinatra etc. and the table linens were white and black.

The table centers featured a dramatic floral display by Rick Crimini from the Arrangement Gallery. Each arrangement had a low base of red roses, white orchids and greenery and from the center on tall stands a fabulous display with 30 long stemmed red roses, white orchids and
trailing greenery. Romantic, beautiful and true 40s/50s style! Rick did an awesome job.

Not to be outdone in the theme department, DJ and Emcee Gary Boeldt, drawing from a vast library of music acquired during his 18 years in the DJ business, played songs that had all the guests humming along. Some of them maybe reminiscing about days gone by, memories of World War 11 when these melodies were popular - some of them might have been in the military listening to “Frank” or “ The Andrew Sisters” at the USO, or watching Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire on the screen. And so to: -

THE BUFFET

ONCE UPON A WEDDING - CATERERS again created a perfect and enticing array of fine food. As the guests joined the line at the Buffet Table they were met by “OOHS and AAHS” as those ahead in the line glimpsed the beautifully displayed selection of Baron of Beef served with Merlot Sauce and Horseradish; Italian Rolled Chicken served with a Madeira Sauce; the elegant Martini Mashed Potato Bar served in glass martini glasses and a fabulous array of vegetables and salads. Truly a meal fit for kings and queens!

To top it all off - for those guests who had room - the wedding cake was not only beautiful to look at but delicious.

THE PARTY

As the party spirit invaded the entire area, The Jon Laskin Band took to the stage and played all the theme songs, dreamy love songs, big band swing tunes and early rock. Soon, most of the guests were on the dance floor trying the “Jitterbug” or the slow dance - a new experience for most of the wedding party and younger guests. You could say the place was really jumping! The Band featured a Sinatra “sing-alike”, who amazed one and all with his renditions of That Old Black Magic, The Girl That I Marry, New York, New York and other favorites. And so, in the language of the era you have to say the entire event was absolutely “Super”.

BACK TO FALKNER

We are happy to report that the need for tents will soon be gone forever. Falkner Winery is building a Tuscan style addition, which will be an indoor reception site with full kitchen, bar, changing room and semicircular glass wall with balconies facing the sunset!! They will be able to accommodate 150+ guests for upscale receptions and dinners. They will also be creating a new ceremony site in the vineyards facing the sunset.
